We have to be the advocates for our children

May 8, 2015, 10:46 AM
I am the mother of an 18 year old daughter who has bipolar disorder and a 15 year old daughter who has depression. I also have depression. (Notice that we have the disease-the disease doesn’t have us!) My daughters and I have worked, and sometimes struggled, together through the years. I’ve done a lot of advocating for my daughters, especially to obtain proper medical and education services that support their mental health. We have to be the advocates for our children; we have to be their voice! While raising my daughters, I went to school to get my bachelors in Psychology and am currently working on getting my masters in social work. I hope to continue to share my knowledge and experiences through my profession to educate, advocate, and provide therapy for children’s mental health. We have a long way to go to eradicate the stigma on mental illness, but it can and will be done!
