My first real experience with someone with mental illness wasn't personal or closely related, but when working with a young man that suffers from autism. I didn't know how to help or work with him. It takes patience and understanding which I'm still working with. What has affected me the most, was how frustrated and sad he was with everything. I try to encourage him and help as much as I can in the small amount of time that I see him. It hurts me to see and hear how he feels about life and the people around him, even his family. I want to learn how to help more, as an individual who never knew any mental illnesses personally, I've never had to. I would like to help encourage change.
