Working with children in the juvenile system has opened my eyes to mental health and how many people, especially kids, are affected. A child may get arrested on a burglary charge, but when you start peeling back the layers, you realize that child has a mental health disorder, may be self-medicating and has not received the help they need. I realized that so many kids are hurting in the juvenile system and sometimes it feels like there are not enough resources. Parents are at a loss. They don’t know what to do and children are hurting. I will keep the conversation going regarding mental illness and make sure I am alerting my co-workers to resources that are available.
